Periods of service and membership shall be calculated in full years, months and days, including the month in which they start and the month in which they finish, months being expressed as a fraction of a year.

a) (i) A member’s period of service is:

• the period for which the contributions specified in Article II 1.07 have been paid, and
• any periods purchased in accordance with paragraph 3 of Chapter III of the Fund’s Regulations by payment of a transfer value from another pension scheme recognised as such by the Fund.

   (ii) A member’s period of membership is:

• the period of service, and
• any periods purchased in accordance with paragraph 4 of Chapter III of the Fund’s Regulations

b) Periods purchased under Chapter III of the Fund’s Regulations are relevant exclusively for the purpose of calculating the total periods of service or membership and do not give retroactive entitlement to rights that existed only under editions of the Rules in force before the member joined the Fund.

c) Where a member whose membership of the Fund terminated for a reason other than retirement, death or total disability, and who was not paid the transfer value as specified in Article II 1.11, rejoins the Fund within one year, the member can choose to cumulate his periods of membership under the conditions applicable on the date he rejoined the Fund. In the event that the member does not choose to cumulate his periods of membership, the periods shall be considered as separate and shall be subject to the respective conditions applicable on the date he joined the Fund for each period.
